Are Photography Contact Lists Becoming Optional?
Here's a prediction: the contact databases commercial photographers have been paying for for years are becoming optional. Fast.
Quick context if you're outside this world. Services like Agency Access and Wonderful Machine run close to a thousand dollars a year and give photographers the email addresses of art buyers, producers, and creative directors inside major agencies. They have been a cornerstone of outreach in this industry for a long time.
A few days ago a friend who works as an artist rep asked if I'd really replaced that with AI, because he had tried it and it didn't work for him. I said, give me any company. He said Starbucks. Three minutes later I'd named creative directors, art directors, and educated email guesses with about a 63 percent accuracy rate based on the verified domain format. Some companies come back at 85 or 90 percent. And you can verify before you send (Hunter.io and RocketReach both have free tiers).
One tip if you try this: feed in the contacts you already have. AI can tell you whether they're still in the role, and every new email guess gets more accurate because there's a format to match against.
So why did it work for me and not for him? Context. My AI knows what I'm looking for and how to look. Most people open a fresh chat and ask a generic question. That's the gap. I'm going to do a whole video on how I set this up.
Two honest notes before anyone celebrates. First, the list was always just the door. The relationship is still the point, and that doesn't get replaced. Second, I think email outreach itself is going to get harder as these tools make contacts accessible to everyone. Printed mail marketing basically died during Covid and never came back. So the question I keep sitting with is, what comes next for reaching potential clients? I don't have that answer yet.
But the photographers who figure out how to open more doors faster are going to have an edge nobody warned them was coming. Follow along, real workflow, not just theory.
